Needs a remake

This movie is definitely worth a remake. I'm picturing Bill Irwin in the Gleason role.

reply

NO!
I am sick of this "remake, reimagine, reboot" twaddle everyone in Hollywood seems to be in to today.
This movie was written by Gleason, music by Gleason, to be a vehicle FOR Gleason!
If they were to remake this today, they would change everything that Jackie did that made it great.

I agree. This generation largely lacks the ability to be imaginative, as evidenced by the proliferation of "entertainment" like the idiot Kardashians and the Joisey morons. Thus, the need to continually "remake" classic movies and television.

Just leave it alone punks.

reply

Why would you want it remade? its a classic as is.
Plus what American studio would take a chance on it? its set in France.
Half of the USA would hate it Automatically without even seeing it.

NO NO NO NO NO ETC.

So it's better that nobody younger than 50 will ever see this movie than let a new director and a new star do a remake? Ridiculous.

The fact that you like the original (as I do) does not mean it cannot be re-done and be even better. Personally I think this movie should be seen, and the only way that is going to happen is if it is remade.

reply

ABSOLUTELY NO REMAKE!!!!!!!! No one could do it as Gleason did it. It was his in more ways than one. He wrote it , scored it, and starred in it. It was so different from anything he had ever done before and he did it well using only body language to get all his emotions across. It would be sacrilege to remake this movie. I really detest remakes for the same reason I detest developers of land. All they can see is MONEY$$$$$$$$ and are blind to anything else except for their own selfish desires. I avoid remakes like I would the plague.

reply

You don't like remakes. So don't go see it. You didn't address any of my comments about a new generation getting a chance to see this incredible story.

And remaking a movie is nothing like land development. Making a new version doesn't require destroying the old version.

reply

gigot has already been remade.

So you are seriously arguing that people younger than 50 are going to watch an old black and white film OVER a new, updated version?

Of course I was using hyperbole when I said "nobody younger than 50." When dealing with humans there is no such thing as an absolute, but to counter my argument (instead of flinging insults like "are you high?") please explain why you think people (of any generation) are more likely to watch the original over a new version.

The story is what is important here, and this is a great story that could be another great movie with the right director and the right cast.

And who suggested anything about cgi?

reply

an old black and white film ~ ?????

It's in COLOR! It's on TCM right now.

I HATE this trend toward "remakes, reimaginations, reboots", too! The day of the successful remake seems to have vanished. Once, it might have been possible, but they certainly cannot do it post-1995 (approximately). A few movies remade in the Eighties weren't so bad; after that~thumbs down!

Turner must have colorized it. I'm glad that they are showing it.

reply

NONSENSE! They did NOT colorize it!

Someone already did and it was a complete disaster. William Macy was in the Gleason role and as much as I like the guy this was a complete abomination. No depth, no humor...it was awful. Anyone who suggests remaking this wonderful film I suggest seeing that monstrosity then watch the original and see how far you get with your idea.

reply

I guess you mean "The Wool Cap" starring William H. Macy. I haven't seen it yet, but I doubt it was kept close to the original.

Another poster mentioned the movie above, with a link to the Wikipedia article.

P.S.--"The Wool Cap" is currently ranked 7.1 stars on IMDb; "Gigot" is close at 7.0 stars.

reply

I agree, although he passed away, I could see Andre the Giant doing Gigot's role. There are a few of todays actors who would be great. Who peed in darksides corn flakes. Its just your thoughts. Dont let him bully you with his.

reply

Peter Boyle could have done it too. And Zero Mostel. But Gleason was fantastic!

reply

Remake THIS? Oh dear God, no.

reply

I guess you didn't read the entire thread. It's already been remade:
