It is purposely directed towards targeting women.
She gets alcohol from her husband. She gets addicted then he gets past it but she suffers for life.

I agree. The only thing I hated about the writing was that he practically forced alcohol down her throat against her protestations SEVERAL times, yet he winds up redeemed and she's a "floozy" whose lapsed judgment under the influence is something HE won't forgive. Seems to me he gets off scott-free for destroying the life of someone he purportedly "loved." It's a bit sickening but true-to-form of the treatment of women at the time.
