How about a Criterion release?
This is a great movie, and surprisingly unknown by a lot of people. When I've shown it to others they always think it's terrific and wonder why they'd never seen it before. An adult film in the truest sense of the term.
Anyway, I think The Counterfeit Traitor would be an excellent candidate for a Criterion release. Criterion has a deal with Paramount to release films from its library, and while Paramount did issue a fine DVD some years ago, a Criterion disc would have all the extras and quality that that company's renowned for. The fact that it's already out from Paramount makes no difference: when that studio released TCT it simultaneously issued The Spy Who Came in From the Cold, and that's just appeared from Criterion. (There are a few Criterion releases that co-exist with the same films issued by their home studios; for example, Spartacus.)
Generally, I prefer that Criterion concentrate on titles not yet released at all (as they did with such Paramount titles as the great Ace in the Hole, If...., and Robinson Crusoe on Mars). But since they do put out some films already issued by others, I believe The Counterfeit Traitor would be an excellent addition to the Criterion library. But I doubt it'll ever happen. Luckily, we have the original Paramount DVD at least.
