reply

Yes.....

Very under-rated, under-appreciated film.
I put in a request to TCM (Turner Classic Movie) several weeks ago to air this film.
Here's hoping it shows up on the schedule in the next couple of months.

Re;
Yes, it is a very underrated and under appreciated film.William Holden and Lilli Palmer should have received Best Actor and best Supporting Actress oscar nominations,The film should have received a best film nomination and George Seaton should have received a best director and Seaton`s screenplay should also have been nominated.
Keeping my fingers crossed that TCM will air it.

The scene with Palmer being brought out to be shot and Holden's silent screams is magnificent !!!!!

Couldn't agree more. This is certainly one of the best movies ever made, and it is a shame it dosen't recieve more attention. What a movie! Introduced me to William Holden, and showed a great international cast with a great script. One of my top 10.

I would say one of the best of it's genre.

Saw it on Netflix tonight. Yes, an extraordinarily good film, which I must have missed when it was released. Holden and Palmer were totally believable in the leads. Reminding me how much I admired Holden's performances as a whole. Very strong leading man. And it strikes me how
manly --to use an old-fashioned word--he came across, Even in his earliest Films, when he was about 20, he seemed much older. A friend of Glen Ford who shared some of his same qualities. His death was tragic. He deserved better. Palmer was a very beautiful woman, but not in the way that detracts. One scene was contrived, the way her character was caught by the Gestapo. The death scene, however, was powerfully affecting. I can actually believe that a woman of her character could make a man change like that.

Yes! I was surprised how good it was especially because I had never heard of it. I thought Lilli Palmer gave an especially excellent performance. The plot was tight and the Hitler Youth kid was particularly creepy.

reply

Yes, this was an outstanding film. I thought maybe the direction was a little pedestrian (like I am an expert on direction! ha!) but it was a really gripping film which never lagged or let your attention stray.

reply

Interestingly, I've always seen Poul Reichardt as Denmark's William Holden. :)

reply

Excellent film. Saw it for the first time today, on a big screen.

Honestly speaking, I find expressions like "ever made" exaggerated and rather stupid.

I saw this film many years ago and I agree that it was/is very good. Nothing more nothing less.
