Not a patch on Mizoguchi's 1941 version

Having watched both movies now, I must say that this http://www.DVDBeaver.com/film/Reviews/47_ronin.htm#47 "The 47 Ronin", by Kenji Mizoguchi, deals with the subject of bushido, which is what the story is all about, on an altogether higher plane, and is in fact one of the greatest films of all time. IMHO of course. Alas, it is not easy to get hold of.

"Chushingura - Hana no maki yuki no maki" = 7/10
"The 47 Ronin" = 11/10

Well, overall user ratings say different. I thought the 1962 version was better.

User ratings don't mean anything. It's one of Mizoguchi's most brilliantly crafted films, and that is certainly saying something.

That movie bored me to the point that I wanted to commit harakiri. If spending three hours talking about how they should kill Kira and then not bothering to show it when they do finally kill him marks a great movie for you, more power to you. Me, I thought it was one of the worst movies I have ever had the misfortune to have to sit through.

Chushingura=9
47 Ronin= -9

In this world theres two kinds of people my friend, those with loaded guns and those who dig

Apart from anything else, the *actual* killing of Kira was not really the point of the film, and not showing it was obviously a concious decision by the director and had nothing to do with "not bothering to show it".

I've watched both versions within the last few days. I loved both but I prefer this version. The 1941 version is certainly better from a technical perspective when it comes to such things as camera work, cinematography and shot composition as well as its deeper thematic material; but this later version is far superior at telling the overall story and developing the characters. I'd give this version a strong 9/10 and the earlier version a very good 8/10.
