Toshiro Mifune Nearly Missing in Cast Lists

It seems strange that Toshiro Mifune is not listed in the short list of the cast, and he is the very last actor listed in the very long full cast list !! Hey, he's one of the key actors in this film.

He's the biggest name, certainly, but his character is a fairly minor one, and not part of the traditional/true story. I think it's rather fine, that such a superstar would accept a small role and low billing in what was a very special project. Can you imagine a modern Hollywood-type star doing likewise?

He's nearly missing in the cast lists because he's nearly missing in the movie. I like Mifune but he had a nothing role in this movie.

reply

Yes, that's what I just said. You could call it a cameo, if you like. A great actor, a superstar, accepting a small role for the general good of the project. It can be done, you know.

Wow indeed; a stately, magnificent film. I'm glad you've seen this, Kikuchiyo-kun, before you see Hana - you'll know why when you watch that one.

Meanwhile it's nice to see some action on this board; it's strange, isn't it, how some films seem to attract pages and pages of comment, some almost nothing. Chushingura is a splendid achievement, lavishly made and quite beautiful, why does nobody know of its existence?

You inspire me to watch it yet again tonight.

I've just finished watching this film for the first time. Loved it, brilliant. It seemed to me that Toshiro Mifune was in more scenes than Takashi Shimura (who was credited high up in the opening credits sequence), which I find even more strange. He was brilliant in this either way and it was nice to see him within this film regardless.

Well, I think the cast list is doing what modern films sometimes do - start with the principal cast, work your way down to the bit players, then at the end - AND (wait for it, wait for it) - SUPERSTAR!

reply

Indeed. I was actually satisfied with the amount of scenes Mifune was in. I also loved how he guarded the bridge in the raid scene. Bad ass.
