George Cuckor really had an eye. Here he was only a few years away from My Fair Lady.
I agree with you. This movie looks like paradise. Unfortunately the movie was not. Very so-so.
Odd that Cuckor despised being called a "woman's director" considering the movies material, not to mention 1939's The Women.
I don't know what people find so interesting about the look of this movie. I wasn't in any way impressed with any of it. Then again, maybe it's because I was trying so hard to find the point of the movie I didn't notice the so-called interesting look.

I can understand that. It's overly long and doesn't have a great plot. Well, if it does it was not well told.
