Weird thing.....

From a very young age- I'd watch any /all horror or related movies on TV. I'm talking 7 years old until now (I'm 54).
I never ever recall seeing this movie on TV ! I am in the NY Tri-state area too! So it's not like I'm in a remote part of New Mexico.
I did not see this until the "fan revival" era -- 1980s on a VHS tape.
How did I never see this before like 1986 ???????

Any thoughts.........
P.S. I was also one of those kids that notated the TV Guide with pen marks as to what movies I needed to watch.

I'm a little older than you - 58 - and grew up in northern New Jersey. I saw COS many times as a child on a show called Creature Features, so it was definitely a staple on TV in the New York City area. A station in San Jose, CA also used to show it when I was a teen living in Northern California in the '70s.

I'm almost 55 and grew up watching the "Creature Double Feature" just about every Saturday in the Philadelphia area, and this is the first time I've seen it too!

LOL channel 9 and 11 showed great movies. But I never saw this one either. Bought it on DVD about 10 years ago. Now TCM shows it once in a while.

I'm the same age as you and also live in the NYC tri-state area. This movie was
shown frequently on WNEW Channel 5's "Creature Features" program. Sometimes they'd show commercials for the movie during the afternoon kid's shows, which was a creepy surprise. The UHF channels in Philadelphia showed it a lot, too.
Maybe you were more of a "Chiller Theater" (Channel 11) or "Fright Night" (Channel 9) fan? I don't think the movie was ever shown on those channels.

Thanks for verifying what I wrote above about seeing it on Creature Features. It's nice to be told at this age that my memory is not playing tricks on me! LOL

Well I am in good company;
However- I was a loyal viewer to WNEW's Channel 5 Creature Features (1969- 1975?) I even OWN like hundreds of TV Guides..... I swear this was never on Creature Features . I don't think it was on Chiller Theatre (WPIX Channel 11) either?
To show I know what I'm talking about; here are some KEY Creature Feature movies:
The Universal Monsters "package" (Dracula, Frankenstein, Bride Of..., Wolfman, House of Dracula, etc.)
Dr. CYclops, Attack of the Crab Monsters, Fiend without a Face, Monster that Challenged the World, Creation of the Humanoids, Not of This Earth, Monster of Padras Blancas, Frankenstein 1970, The Flesh Eaters, on Halloween 1970 they showed Mad Monster Party!, The Creep was the host. He was just a guy with glasses . His name was Lou Steele. He was a local DJ in NYC. They did a tie-in with The Monster Times newspaper/magazine. They did "Creepy Quotes" a game wherein at the bottom of the screen a word would pop up every 15 minutes. The connecting words formed a movie title (example : "Night...of...the...living...dead" . The Creep would then call a viewer at home and ask them if they know the quote. If they did- they won a years subscription to The Monster Times.
Over at Chiller Theatre on WPIX Channel 11 The classic claymation hand in a pool of blood would open the program (this was friggin' amazing!) Chiller had the Toho Package: War of the Gargantuas, Destroy All Monsters, Mothra, Gammera, various Godzillas, etc.
Want more? The Crawling Eye, Teenage Werewolf, Teenage Frankenstein, Invasion of the Saucer Men, How to Make a Monster, Frankenstein's Daughter, Black Sabbath, Blood and Lace, a slew of cheap Euro Horrors (Graveyard of Horror, WHAT, etc.) and Spanish Horrors like Frankenstein's Bloody Terror.
This is where I first saw the CLASSIC bad movie Dracula Vs. Frankenstein ! I LOVE THAT MOVIE!
Later on Chiller acquired the classic movie: The Twisted Brain (remember Mr. Mumps?)
Chiller lasted until the mid 1980s actually -- even though it was on at 2AM after Joe Franklin. It was like "Oh geezz...I have to wake up for school tomorrow!"
So you see I know my *beep* and I still say Carnival of Souls never palyed on these 2 shows.
IT MAY have played on WOR Channel 9. Not of Fright Night - but as a stand-alone movie at 3AM. ?

Oh well. I saw this film many times as a kid in the '60s in Fair Lawn, New Jersey, so I must have seen it somewhere. Then, when I moved to California in 1969, it was regularly shown on Channel 36 in San Jose. Creature Features must be before 1969, since I watched it as a kid but I moved away in 1969. I also vaguely remember Chiller Theater and a number of the films you mention.

The reason I remember COS so vividly is because it affected me in a way no other horror film ever did when I was a kid because it was so uniquely unnerving. I always looked for it and always watched it when it was on. But as to what station it was on, I haven't a clue.

I totally remember the first time I saw COS. It was on Creature Feature (WDCA Channel 20, Washington DC). It came on at 11 PM Saturday night. The year was 1980. I don't think it aired much, if any, before 1980 on TV.
