They made a joke about it in Family Guy.

Wiht all the drinking, he had a tendency to put on weight, especially around the middle.

Years ago, I read one of his quotes wherein he mentioned being praised for his trademark "walk." His response was "Hell, I'm just trying to hold my big fat gut in", or something to that effect.

I think he walked that way because he was self-conscious about his pot belly.
