Coubotand:
It looked like Burt was making a concerted effort to blow the smoke away from the birds - most obviously to me when he was nursing the first bird he had, the sparrow - but you're absolutely right...I thought the same thing when I saw him around them with a lit cigarette.
smokehill retrievers:
I am no bird expert by any stretch, but I own 2 parrots, and it's a big no-no to smoke around them, especially in enclosed areas. But Coubotand is right there as well....it should be common sense. Just another aside to illustrate birds' smaller lung capacity: I've known people who've known people who lost their bird(s) when they were cooking with non-stick cookware and didn't return to the stove quickly enough and burned the teflon(?) off, creating fumes that wouldn't be nearly enough to hurt a human...but when the bird(s) breathed it in, they died.
These are all very basic things any bird owner must know, along with what foods/drinks can kill them (chocolate, caffeine, alcohol, avocado, eggplant, etc.)
