Prison is great!

This is a fine advert for the US prison system.
The prisoner is guilty of murder.
By the end of the film he is massively improved by the prison system and can even identify planes by the noise they make when they fly overhead.
Hurrah for prison!

He looked up and saw the plane. He would have had plenty of opportunities to look up and see planes flying over when he was at Alcatraz, while outside playing handball, etc. He read books and articles about planes.

Where did you get the impression that he can differentiate airplanes based on the noises they made? It was never implied. The poster above is correct, he researched everything he knew.

So? He researched it while in prison! My point still stands.
