What happened to the birds?

I realize that much of this film is fiction. However, it is true that Stroud was transferred from Leavenworth to Alcatraz, and was not allowed to keep birds in the latter location. I wonder if anyone knows what became of his canaries.

According to the book, the birds and everything else were shipped to his brother. many died on the trip.

Some of the birds in the film were later used in Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds.
One of the larger canaries also later appeared on the TV series Sesame Street.

Those birds were chameleons! I didn't even recognize they were the same birds.

They were given to the local animal shelter to entertain and feed the cats. Waste not, want not.
