Vic Damone

I just watched "Jumbo" on DVD and it seemed to me that Stephen Boyd's singing voice sounded a lot like Vic Damone. Whoever provided the vocalizing did an admirable job, though the voice sounded nothing like Mr. Boyd's speaking voice. I checked IMDb to see who actually did the dubbing but there was no information there. Did anyone else hear Vic Damone?

PS - I agree with the previous poster that John Astin played the hapless airplane pilot. Maybe MGM didn't credit him because the airplane hadn't been invented yet.

I read on another site that lists vocal doublers for films, that a singer named James Joyce did Stephen Boyd's vocals.

reply

Stephen Boyd's vocals in JUMBO were dubbed by a baritone named James Joyce.

Oh, I disagree, I thought the singing voice sounded exactly like Boyd's speaking voice...but I knew it couldn't really be him, because if he could sing that well, he would have made more musicals and recordings. It wouldn't be fair, would it, for one man to have so much...to be the most gorgeous man in the world, PLUS have a great singing voice !

reply

Oh, my... he was the most gorgeous man ever. And when I first saw this in a movie theatre, I was a preteen. Couldn't sleep without dreaming about him. Wonderful, wonderful.

Actually, Stephen Boyd did have a very good singing voice: In "The Big Gamble" (1961), a film that sadly is not available on DVD, he sings a traditional Irish ballad, "Beautiful Eileen", and he's really great in it. Needless to say I agree with you about the "gorgeous" part...

I believe it was a Broadway actor named Stephen Doughlas. He was in Damn Yankees.

reply

His singing was dubbed by a singer named James Joyce.

Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.
