Filming locations?

Does anyone know where this film was shot? Some of the locations seem to be Israel or Syria, but I am not sure. Imdb does not say anything.

reply

marcin kukuczka,

Barabbas was shot entirely in Italy. Many of the locations did a very good job standing in for Israel.

Thanks! Do you happen to know where exactly in Italy? I heard that the crucifixion scene was shot during a factual eclipse.
The following locations are the ones I suppose but am not sure:
1. Matera for Jerusalem (like it was for some later films)
2. Ethna for the sulphur mines (exteriors)
3. Rome in the moment Barabbas takes the body of Sahak and is going to burry him.
I really don't know where the amphitheatre is. I suppose it is the Dino de Laurentiis Studio

reply

marcin kukuczka,

Sorry, but I don't know where exactly in Italy.

reply

The amphitheatre is in Verona, now used for Opera productions. Jerusalem/Rome was built on the studio backlot, designed by Mario Chairi (not sure of the spelling)

Three of my girlfriends and I, ages ranging from 12-16, spent one Saturday in early April 1961 as extras in the Arena in Verona for the filming of the gladiators, lions, amazon women, etc. scenes. Such fun - we were furnished cotten "dresses", and had to ensure all of our jewelry was removed or hidden from view. Then we had to cheer when directed to do so. I think we were paid 600 lira each for the day! Your message board brought back lots of memories for one Army dependent!

I was watching this movie and I thought "Wow, that must have been expensive!" It had some really breathtaking scenes that movie makers would never do anymore - it would be half digital. My wife thought the extras might have done it just for fun, so its good to know the movie producers paid the extras. I wonder how much money was spent making that film. There were so many extras and buildings. Some were just paintings, but a fair amount were real (facades, at least).
What an epic motion picture.

600 Lira = 26p(5/- sterling) or 40c
