It's fitting the the closet case gay Senator who winds up killijg himself at the end would be a guy named Brigham from Utah. Religious right and it's hypocrisy!

He was not an in-the-closet gay man.
He had one homosexual encounter while in the service, but apparently
none since. Neither the movie nor the book suggest otherwise. Because of the anti-gay sentiment of the times, he chose to hide this encounter. and when the pressure became too great, and perhaps to spare his wife and family any embarrassment he made a sad decision to end his life

No, it was terrible that some one black mailed him and the new president withdraw the nominee. Liberal leaning Leffingwell, or should I say LEFTington?
