Carson was the right guy at the right time, from 1960 up to about 1980. He really should have retired then, when he was at his peak. But Fred Silverman caved in when Carson asked for a boatload of money to stay on the air. It's hard to turn something like that down.
With that said, he seemed to epitomize the axiom that you can't be successful by being a nice guy. The entertainment industry, in particular, is truly a dog-eat-dog world. He was a bastard personally, but he had to be to stay on top for nearly thirty years, which is an amazing feat by any stretch of the imagination.
George Burns probably put it best when he said, "Show business is a hideous bitch goddess".
