Was Merv's 60's Shows More Pervocative / Integrated Than Carson?

I remember Merv from 70 on... but I've been tuning into the ones they're running now with Treacher. Today's episode had Dion Warwick but more importantly had Dick Gregory. Dick was talking for at least 15 minutes in front of what must have been a largely white audience. It showed Merv was not always looking for entertainment nor what might be considered the 'norm' of the time.

" Nothing's too good for the man who shot Liberty Valance "

Johnny--and NBC-- wasn't interested in being anything but an entertainer. There were times when he talked JFK assassination though among other controversial subjects particularly of scientific nature.

Merv owned his show. He could do anything he wanted. He was very conservative but didn't seem to me like an oppressive personality.
