"Hoarse-y" Lucy

She sounded a lot different on "I Love Lucy."

On TLS, her voice is "gravelly" (as television critic described it).

What happened?

Well, in-between, she starred in the Broadway musical "Wildcat!", and singing her heart out 8 performances a week - without proper vocal training - permanently wrecked her voice.

"Don't call me 'honey', mac."
"Don't call me 'mac'... HONEY!"

Actually, I've noticed the change in her voice when she did the Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour. Her voice started to have a raspy tone during the late 50s. I think the smoking probably contributed to the hoarseness in her voice.

Don't play games with a girl who can play better.

It's wild. I always thought this show was many years after I Love Lucy, she looks and sounds so much older. But it was only a few years later. Hard living with smoking and drinking takes a fast toll.

Continuing my exploration of all things Lucy, discovered that she was already 40 when I Love Lucy hit the airwaves. So she was in her 50s here. Had no idea she was that old. She looked so young on the original show.
