Carol Burnett episodes: "Painful" to watch

I just revisited this show and watched Carol Burnett on it.

Amazing!

Carol takes center stage and does all the things that Lucy Ricardo used to do: scheming, acting truly wacky, all kinds of physical comedy, even getting drunk. (Were these a test to see if Carol deserved her own show?)

Meanwhile, Lucy Carmichael just sort of stands on the side and either encourages her or - worse yet - just watches.

That, in a nutshell, is why I never found Lucy on TLS "funny" - but I often found myself laughing at the guests. All the guest stars always stole her thunder, meanwhile, she ended up stuck with Mr. Mooney yelling at her for being lame-brained.

"Don't call me 'honey', mac."
"Don't call me 'mac'... HONEY!"

Yeah - that pretty much says it all all right - except that Lucy deserves the attention - because annoying guest stars like that are so irritating that you just hope and pray for Lucy to clobber them with something.

That one's a very bad episode all right - but Mary Jane, Mr. Mooney and Mr. Cheever more than make up for it all - along with Lucy - because you're just so glad to see some of those annoying guest stars to go away that you're hoping and praying for more of Lucy, Mary Jane, Mr. Mooney and Mr. Cheever.

Robert Goulet is one of those rare exceptions - because he has actual talent - and looks and charisma. - So does Ann Sothern very much! - And same with Sheldon Leonard. - But some of those loud mouth heavy irritations all right - like Burnett, Rivers, and those annoying nontalents really drag down any show no matter what.

 Mellow Salutations!

Lucy was allowing Carol to have her moment in the spotlight. Nothing painful about this episode. A guest star does not therefore make Lucille Ball no longer funny. Likely, it's more about your age then the age of the show.

reply

No - it's more about Lucy's age.

"Don't call me 'honey', mac."

Lucy was only in her 50's. Her age, her age, her age....TLS was in the top 3/ ratings. Yet, you all enjoy other actresses who are even older than Lucy doing the same thing. And Lucy was not doing slapstick nor pratfalls during every episode, assuming most of you even watched more than 3 episodes. You don't know what you're talking about. If it's that "painful", you all need to toughen up.
