That pontoon bridge is back again

I've been watching Combat on MeTV, and that pontoon bridge seems to show up fairly often. I think I've seen it about 4 times in the past couple of weeks. And I've yet to see any shows in the snow. Ok, I realize there isn't much snow in southern California.

I don't see it in their (metv) current schedule.

They must have dropped it. I can only see it on the Heroes & Icons network.

Hey folks,

While most of the 152 episodes were filmed on the MGM backlots and in Franklin Canyon in the mountain hills west of Los Angeles, there were at least two, maybe three, episodes filmed near Squaw Valley for winter episodes. Silver Service and The Mountain Man were both filmed in or around Squaw Valley and featured some serious snow.

They also sent a second film unit to France to shoot location shots for a bunch of episodes. The actors were not sent to France for the shooting; extra actors were used in long shots which were then cut in the various episodes.

I think the pontoon bridge was used on one of the MGM backlots, and these were the same backlots which were used over and over for so many episodes. The French village was part of MGM Backlot 2, and they did manage to change features and camera angles in such ways that most folks never realized they were seeing the same sets from one week to another. It was only when the series went into syndication that we had a chance to see episodes repeatedly and were more likely to notice familiar parts of sets. Some of the features which stood out for me included the two-arch bridge in the village, Eucalyptus Road on Backlot 3 (it is easily recognized by the long rows of eucalyptus trees on both sides of the long narrow road), the canal in the village which was changed in many ways, and the concrete trenches seen so often in scenes shot in Franklin Canyon.

There were also a few episodes filmed on and around the Korbel Winery near San Francisco, but SergeantSaunders62 makes a very good point when suggesting that most of the filming was shot within 20 miles (perhaps more like 30 or 35 miles) of Culver City. After watching the episodes so many times over the years, I now seem to accept the repeated scenery as old friends. It was a great show.

Best wishes,
Dave Wile

As a child in grade school in 60's I don't think I noticed these things. I too notice them now and how bad the color episodes look.
I remember seeing the McHale's Navy movie as a kid and being confused since it was in color.

Yeah, the color episodes look strange.

I figured out that because my dad was not so fast to buy a color tv we probably watched all the color episodes in black and white.
