For those who like the Beverly Hillbillies movie

You guys should check out the marathon I did with that film plus Addams Family, Brady Bunch movie, Coneheads, and Richie Rich titled When A Family Is Eccentric. You can check it out on my blog.

I don't understand the hatred towards the Hillbillies movie. I thought it was awesome and I grew up with the film.

I loved the casting for the 1993 movie. My only complaint was there was a lot of mugging for the camera, and it really wasn't necessary. The characters didn't need it.

I don't see how anybody who knew the original cast COULD like the movie. They ruined Elly Mae by turning her into a crude tobacco chewing redneck. Granny's replacement was a pitiful shadow of Granny. The Jethro was horrible. A cardboard cutout of Max Baer Jr. would have been 1,000 times funnier than that guy was. Jim Varney was the only one who was a fairly good fit. He played Jed about as authentic to the original character as it would be possible to do. Also the movie suffered from the same flaw so many remakes do. For some reason it always comes across and making fun of the original characters when they pull them into the present time for the remake. They tend to show the characters as more naïve and stupid, which I always find puzzling when you think about the fact that the audience is going to be largely made up of fans from the original show. Why on earth do the film makers think it's a good idea to ridicule a show this way. Also they can't resist sexual insinuations and other dirty things that are totally inconsistent with the original TV show. I watched the movie once and that is enough for me.

Jim Varney as Jed Clampett could at least have gotten "...weeeeeeelll dogies..." correct. Didn't he say "...Weeee dogies..." instead?

I'm pretty sure you are right there about the "Weee Doggies" vs. the real original "Weeeeellllll Doggies". The original cast of this show was so perfect that any attempt to remake it is doomed to failure. :)

The Brady Bunch movies of all the remakes of tv shows were the only ones that were well done and well received.
Part of the reason was they duplicated the sets exactly and they redid the opening credits exactly.
That is what the audience wants to see.
The mansion they used in the Hillbillies move was not even close to the original.
They could have at least copies the interiors.

Plus, yeah, the cast.
Who can beat the original?
Love Cloris Leachman but she is not Irene Ryan.

The cast was fine except for Jethro. Jim Varney had possibly his best role ... well ... that's not too hard, even though Ernest amused me. LOL CLoris Leachman nailed Granny. Dabney Coleman made a fine Drysdale. I thought Lily Tomlin overplayed Jane Hathaway a bit, but that's Lily Tomlin. Erika Eleniak was just fine as Ellie Mae.

Many times people put the original show on a pedestal. The characters in the TV show were as naive as naive can be. That was part of the premise. There was no difference in the movie. Only Jethro was portrayed as dumb. Everyone else was very capable, but it was "fish out of water" plotting, so of course they were written to perceive things differently and relate new things to what they knew from the "hills" in an interesting way.

the original tv show:

Mr. Drysdale telling Jethro about his application to work at the Commerce Bank after Jethro applied.

Mr. Drysdale:"Jethro, where it says 'sex', you're supposed to write 'male', not 'oh boy'.

Actually, the original series did that. And here's the proof:

I couldn't find the other one I was looking for on youtube, but the first one above is what I originally thought about when I read your post, so that will do.

if this film was made by the people who redid Wild Wild West then the family would have been black but still tried to make them red neck
