Was it common in the 60s to call your boss "chief"?

… Or was this some way that Ms. Hathaway emphasized what an autocrat he was?

reply

I think from time to time, Della Street called Perry Mason "Chief", and on Superman Perry White was often called "Chief" by the reporters. But in real life I never called my boss "Chief".

reply

Lois Lane, Clark Kent, and Jimmy Olsen called their boss, Perry White "Chief" and thatcwas in the mid fifties.

reply

I've heard that firemen often call the big boss "chief."

reply

Indians too.

And what's this "Ms. Hathaway" crap-ola. It was Miss Jane or Miss Hathaway. If you are trying to show a regional pronunciation then "Miz Hathaway" would be the choice.

reply

You are correct. If somebody had said "Ms." in 1962, Miss Hathaway would have said "what the hell does that mean?".

reply

Maxwell Smart always called his boss "Chief" on Get Smart.
