Random Laughter

Simon & Garfunkel performed on this special. They did a few of their regular numbers, primarily with just Simon on guitar, and then sang with Andy Williams.

During their opening number, "Mrs. Robinson", there were random bursts of (what I'm sure was) canned laughter. It was just really odd. I don't consider that song to be funny and the laughs didn't seem to coincide with a lyric that was amusing.

I was confused by that too and wondered if off-air banter took place between Simon and the audience.

Maybe he had been told to play to the camera during the song because the laughter seemed to come when he sang to the camera. He could have been joking with the audience before they went live.
