Nothing Ever Happens in Linvale

[No actual spoilers]

I watched "Linvale" on MeTV last night, and now having read the reviews here, I found that one person discussed how smart the sheriff was. This prompts me to wonder, did he suspect the truth all along (or at some point), or did he just get lucky at the end? And if he did suspect the truth, what was it that made him suspect?

I wondered the same thing and at first just thought lucky. I wztched a 2nd time with my Wife and I think it was due to suspicions because he wouldn't take no for an answer on getting the dog after he said he had already buried it. Up till that time he had been real easy going but then he was persistent. But I think it was something Hitchcock wanted as an enduring question.

Personally, I think he just got lucky in the end. If it hadn't been for the dog, I think the two "neighbors" may have gotten away with it!

Thinking it over, I can't help feeling that had the lady next door never called the sheriff in the first place, they probably might have gotten away with it. It didn't seem to me that anyone was interested until the sheriff started asking around.
I liked Parker in this role though. I think the guy was a smart man.

Linvale was a fun, easy to take episode, Miss Margo. I watched it not too long ago and enjoyed it. There was no reaching for a higher meaning in it. I suppose above average journeyman effort would be a glib and apposite way to describe it. The actors sold it, as the almost charismatic contrasting acting styles of intense, earthy, brighter than average Gary Merrill and laid back, easygoing down home Fess Parker provided the viewer with something to think about, maybe even talk about. The digging up the dead dog part was like a bone tossed out for the viewer. It felt factitious, set up, necessary only for the irony of the ending. After all, we couldn't have the man and woman getting away with anything. In the end this one came off like a playful dark comedy, which is certainly was.

It was fun, right up to the twist at the end. I honestly had no idea that the guy and the woman next door even liked each other, much less dreamed up such an elaborate plan to be together.
LOL! I can't help thinking that if they hadn't called in the sheriff, they could have gotten away with it!

It was a bit strange that the episode played out as it did. Maybe they wanted to establish a hostility between the two neighbors so as to allay suspicions; but then they were likely to be seen together sooner or later. I suppose if they'd moved away from Linvale that might have worked, but they seemed so comfortable there. It's obvious that the man and woman didn't anticipate that their behavior would be looked into (or at) at some point in the future; such poor planning for these two. And all that effort, too!
