About the gun in the end (spoiler)

Why did Sanjuro allow him to have it? It was obvious there were still bullets, and he might as well have been shot. Well, this happens many times in movies.

Because Sanjuro is a boss

Warriors code of honor. Sanjuro understood why his opponent felt the need to die with his weapon.

reply

I felt that Sanjuro would have been ok with dying. Remember him saying that he wasn't going to die because he still has people to kill. He killed those people. It was also for the honor of the other samurai.

I thought this was a very weak part of the film. There are many explanations (doesn't care whether he lives or dies? deep problems in past?)
(he is being stupid because he doesn't understand guns?)
but none of these explanations are great.

The equivalent scene in Fistful is much better.

Why do people jump with parachutes? Why do people drive fast cars? Why do people like to fight other people? It's about getting the rush. He got the rush by being in danger and killing people and being a bad-ass.

I think it's more common sensical than all the answers you've gotten; he just didn't see it as a threat. The man was on his last legs, could barely control his body because of the pain and blood loss, so what if he held his weapon one last time. Sanjuro could have taken him if he were really threatened.

reply

Sanjuro was probably sure Unosuke doesn't have enough blood to pull that trigger from a relaxed position.

reply

I think he was unsure of that, and that I think was the whole point. He was leaving it up to fate, just like he chose his path at the fork in the road at the beginning of the story.

reply

Sanjuro takes chances, that's what he does during the whole film. He's a bit of a gambler and a daredevil, probably because he's so good at swordplay; he needs dangerous entertainment. After his escape, when he's hiding in the barrel and he makes them stop to watch the attack on Seibei's house, that was reckless too. The whole idea of pitting two rival clans against each other was playing with fire.
