“You’ve spelt me name wrong”

An amusing story from Sir John Mills about the precocious cherub Alan Barnes who played the little brother Charles Bostock.

On arriving for the first days filming the little “thesp” was being shown around the set when he spotted three “directors type” canvas chairs set up in a row for the director and the two lead actors, each complete with their name printed on the back.

“You’ve spelt me name wrong, ” he announced loudly, while pointing to the chair reserved for Alan Bates. Without missing a beat, Mills apologised profusely for the oversight and promised a remedy by the very next day. Sure enough, by the start of filming the next morning the tree chairs had been joined by a fourth, child sized replica, complete with the correct spelling of Alan Barnes.

Great story! I wonder what Alan Barnes is doing now, I thought he was absolutely brilliant in the film.

Alan has a building/joinery business in Ribchester in Lancashire.

Apologies if this has been mentioned and/or explained before but why is Alan Barnes (Charlie) not mentioned in the IMDb cast list?

reply

That is strange as he was always shown in the cast list before.I don't know why he has been deleted but there has been problems before with his credits being incorrect. He only made one more film The Victors' in 1963 and he is not on that cast list either.
Previously he had been shown as being in Eastenders and Love Actually but that was a different Alan Barnes ,and this actor was of African descent.I tried to correct this but IMDB didn't accept my correction.
Now he seems to have disappeared completely,we will just have to wait and see if he shows up again, but I have given up making corrections as it is so complicated, and they often won't accept them.
