More films like Viridiana

I recently saw Viridiana, a great film by Buñuel. I'd appreciate it if anyone could suggest more films like this that deal with the main subject like Von Trier's Dogville and Manderlay (if you have seen those films you can see the relation with Viridiana) that are also very good in my opinion.

Try Bunuel's The Milky Way, or L'Age Dor (a full-on surrealist film, or The Exterminating Angel, if you're talking about his attitude to religion...

Thanks for your reply. I already have The Exterminating Angel but haven't seen it yet, I will do it soon. I will try to get the other ones too.

TRISTANA (also by Bunuel) is similar-ish in a way to Viridiana (Fernando Rey desiring a woman he can't have), though i think if you like this you should just have a look at literally anything by Bunuel, but im sure you'd like "los olvidados" however, its not very accessible on dvd.

I saw "El angel exterminador" last Sunday. Very good movie. About "Los olvidados", I have seen it and I have to say is very good too. I am going to add Tristana to my "must see" films list. Buñuel is a great director. I will see "Un chien andalou" soon.

Thanks for your recommendation.

The film that comes closest to Viridiana is Nazarin. Also a film about a religious person losing faith.

reply

Well... whether he loses faith or not is a matter of dispute...

Definitely try Buñuel's Los olvidados (1950,) another beautiful film that finds poetry and humour in the poor. http://imdb.com/title/tt0042804/

For blasphemous wit, a rich and long-standing Spanish tradition, try his Simón del desierto (Simon of the Desert; 1965) http://imdb.com/title/tt0059719/

Los olvidados is on youtube in about 8 parts if you want to see it.

Definitively you should try another films by Buñuel with a similar subject to some extent: "Nazarín", "El ángel exterminador", "Simón del desierto", "L'âge d'or", "Él", etc..

or some Pasolini works, in particcular "The Gospel According to St. Matthew" and "The Hawks and the Sparrows"

Thanks to all for your recommendations. Equinoccio: so far, I have seen all those Buñuel's films ("Los olvidados", "Tristana" and others too) and also Pasolini's "The Gospel According to St. Matthew". Buñuel is now, one of my favorite directors (I'd like to see "La via lactea") and Pasolini is good too. Although, I did not like his most famous "Salo." In my opinion, "Mamma Roma" is superior.

I thought Dreyer's 'Ordet' was similar to Viridiana, in that it is very naturalistic and has the main theme of religion.

it's amazing how Nazarin and Simon of the desert are connected with this film-

Actor in Nazarin went through the change of heart from saint to human.
In Viridiana, this same actor helps Silvia to go through the same change.
In Simon of the desert, Silvia helps Simon to go through transformation from saint.

Tess (of the Durbervilles) by Polanski. Same pessimistic portray of a society, old versus new, naive girl, a cousin.

Au Hasard Balthazar by Robert Bresson. Winter Light by Ingmar Bergman. Stalker by Andrei Tarkovsky. The Decalogue by Kryztof Kieslowski.

Dogville is a great parallel, absolutely spot on, and yet so different, not easy to make that connection, so well done!
