i didn't like this movie, tell me which one to watch

i liked the way the indoor scenes were filmed, but excessive handheld does nothing for me. i didn't like breathless but this one was closer. personally, i care more about how a film is shot than anything else. but if it's handheld the whole time it has to at least have a plot.

can someone please tell me his best shot film? or the one with the most interesting plot?

thanks

"PIerrot le fou" will probably be your favorite, then.

reply

awesome, thank you

Actually, re-reading your post, I feel I should clarify.

Few will disagree that "Pierrot le fou" is his 'best' shot film, but for story, I'd go with "Alphaville." I feel that that is his most accessible film, but a lot of people seem to have trouble with it. I would say you should see both of them. Godard, Cassavetes, Renoir... with most of the great directors it's not a good idea to see one film and then wait a while and then see another. It's better to see a whole bunch at the same time when you're first starting out.

even better. thanks!

how about bergman? i didn't like the seventh seal but i LOVED persona. can you recommend my next bergman film?

reply

Wow. I loved "The Seventh Seal." I don't know of any other Bergman films that are like "Persona," but I recommend "Cries and Whispers" just because that's a brilliant film.
If you liked "Persona," you should check out Tarkovsky. See "Solaris."

reply

cool. i did like solaris but i only saw it once i need to refresh my memory. i want to see more tarkovsky.

thanks for the recommendations!

reply

Talking about Tarkovsky, you should check Stalker (1979)
Pierrot Le Fou is indeed a great Godard film, one of my all time favorites...
A bout de souffle is also superb, with a lovely Jean Seberg.

"I collect blondes and bottles" - The Big Sleep

reply

Yes, "Stalker" is my favorite Tarkovsky.

You may have already seen these films by now, but if you like Persona I would recommend...

Shame
A Passion (also known as The Passion of Anna)
Hour of the Wolf
From the Life of the Marionettes
Rite

...all are very similar, hermetic character-dramas, with characters engaging in psychological manipulation and emotional turmoil; much like Persona.

I'd go with "Alphaville." I feel that that is his most accessible film, but a lot of people seem to have trouble with it.

If you recognize that most people seem to have trouble with Alphaville, then why would you consider it Godard's most accessible film??

And while Pierrot le fou is beautiful, I'd say his best "shot" film is Contempt.

Get better.

That's true. It was his most accessible for me, though that doesn't necessarily make it a good recommendation. I just thought I'd mention it, at least.

reply

The OP should watch Pierrot le Fou and Contempt.
As for Bergman, check out Cries and Whispers and Fanny and Alexandre.

I find Alphaville his film that I least like; way too repetitive and visually a bit uninspiring. Anything with Anna K though usually spellbinds me, particularly A bande apart and Vivre sa vie. I liked the playful charms of Pierrot le Fou as much as Une Femme est Une Femme. Contempt was also mighty fine.

His "best shot" films are arguably his most recent ones; Nouvelle vague, Hélas pour moi, Éloge de l'amour and Notre musique are amongst the most beautifully shot films in the history of French cinema.

Though of course, Le Mepris is also incredibly pretty.

You could keep trying, but in the end no one except the worst kind of person would actually hold it against you if you don't like Godard.

BTW< I liked this movie a great deal. Sometimes things click and sometimes they don't.

I find that if a person see's one Godard movie and doesn't like it, they usually don't like any.

I personally like his filming style. I really could do without slick hollywood effects and dolly shots in every scene. That's just me.

And keep in mind, Breathless was made by a movie fan on a shoestring budget.

reply

Not sure I'd say that first bit of advice is true. I watched Breathless due to all of the acclaim I'd heard and really didn't like it (not because of the filming style, which I actually thought was cool, but because of the story.) so I was put off watching any more Godard films. However, I then watched Vivre Sa Vie and liked it, then watched Pierrot le Fou and loved it. So I suppose like most directors, some of his films fit different tastes.

"weeekend" is one of the most brilliantly shot films of all time.

Question: How can one know whether a movie has been shot with a handheld camera or not?
