Richard Rust as Gus Steals the Show

He even inspired part of a short story.

scroll down to The Shades of Richard Rust.

Anyway, Rust was 15 years younger than Robertson (who looked AWFUL in this movie) and it showed. Rust looked handsome, wore nice suits and stole scenes by turning a zippo, eating a banana and smoking. Whenever he was ordered to hit, his eyes glazed over, he put on his shades and went to work. A great characterization, and he should have rec'd much more attention because of it! An amazing performance directed by Sam Fuller.

he was great, but roberston was great too.

oh yes, i agree with you, i've always liked him, esp. in PICNIC when he says "I HOPE HE GETS AWAY!"

He was terrific in this movie. He conveyed a lot of depth with a few simple facial expressions, too, like when he was instructed to carry out the hit on the little girl. The Syndicate villains in this movie were really nasty, especially for a 1961 film.

I agree. AND I think I saw this movie in "the show" when I was 10 !! We went to the movies every week. I love the part where Rust dials the phone for about a half minute, haha!

Those are called "theaters".

"Rust was 15 years younger than Robertson..."

Robertson was thirty-six in the summer of 1960 when "Underworld U.S.A." was filmed. Rust was twenty-five.
