The 1st reel was phoney stereo on TV; how's the DVD?

An audiophile buddy of mine recently recorded the film when it aired on television. He writes, "The first ten minutes 55 seconds are phoney stereo then it goes into the original mono soundtrack.
I don't know if it's like this on the DVD release or if this was the Sony Movie Channel's fault."
