The meaning of the play?

I saw the movie a while ago but I remember that the play was one my favorite parts of this masterpiece. I think its themes are bergman's usuals and the long duration dosen't mean more importance because bergman or fellini or antonioni are icons of modern cinema and in contradiction with classic movie making, their scripts are not made around a single plot.they are trying to make a mood and feeling among the audience.
