The meaning of the name Minus?

Is this a common Swedish name? Is there a meaning other than negative or is it just a name like David, Martin, and Karin?

reply

I'm from Sweden and I thought the same thing when I saw the movie.
I've never heard of anyone called Minus and it means the same thing as minus in english.
Possibly it's a nickname akin to 'Junior'.
I did a google search to see if anyone had that name, and apparently it's a popular name for cats and dogs. Someone mentioned in a forum that his middle name is Minus, so apparently it exists as a name for humans...

Linus is a common swedish name, but with Minus I don't know. It sorta rings a bell, so maybe its a nickname they used a long time ago, like Junior, like the previous poster said.

On the version I just watched, at one point the name was given as Linus once in the subtitles, so I guessed Minus was a family nickname (karin was also given a nickname a few times). I suppose it is meant to be jokey, but to a sensitive soul like Minus it could be quite emotionally damaging. I think the constant use of it by the others indicates their attitude to him, seeing him as child-like and/or insignificant, and leading to him being a bundle of neuroses.

I have seen this movie many times, but yesterday's viewing was the first time that I think Minus's father called him by his full name of "Dominus". As I say, this is what I think I heard and it does make a lot of sense. "Dominus" is the Latin word for "God" or "Christ". It can also mean a church minister (such as Bergman's own father was). "Dominus" is also the same Latin root for names such as Dominic, Dominica, Dominique, etc., etc. so for a Swede to name his son "Dominus" seems plausible to me.

Boy (brother) is named/called Peter in an English language dubbed version by the criterion!

reply

^Never watch any movie that is dubbed. They are always rubbish.

reply

yes,
37th minute he clearly says dominus
