So, after the accident and the death of the brother, they couldn't let the police have the keys without a major giveaway as to who they were (the dead guys bother),... Fair enough ... But just to drive to a busy location (Railway station for example), and a very quick call to the police "There are two people locked in th vault of the ... bank at... wherever..". Even if the police traced the call (very unlikely after such a short call), they would be away long before anyone got there. The police get there several hours earlier, may be even getting keys from head office or something.

OK, that loses them the advantage of the robbery not being discovered for several days- bad thing-.. but still a lot less risk than going back to the bank with cutting gear etc.

...But instead of doing that very simple thing what do they do? They decide to go back to the bank with oxyacetylene torches to break back in!

And they didn't have to ring the police. They could have left the keys somewhere and rung the fire brigade.
