The expressionistic acting... the themes of sexual repression, whether self imposed or societal... the idealism of youth... control, fatalism and the supremacy of the present in the face of an uncertain future...
It's so good... I can't think of a recent young adult drama that is as moving... Quality ending 😎

Yes, one of my favorite films ! I always instinctively associate Natalie Wood with this movie.
shareI always felt there was too much Wood. Especially at the institution. I guess I was more drawn to the period and wish there were more scenes of the town. Teenage angst has never been my favorite theme. A better Inge story, for me, was The Dark At The Top Of The Stairs. MUCH better character development, and NEVER broadcast anymore. You can catch it on the net off some Europeon website. Eve Arden and Angela Lansbury (her favorite role) are wonderful in it.

I used to feel that way about Wood's histrionics in this movie, but over the years, the more I see it, the more I appreciate it and it has grown on me. I think it's her best performance.
