Ending scene

I love this movie, but the final scene when Deanie and her friends are driving away, I get such a feeling of utter despair; the fact that you know that Deanie and Bud should be together but never will be. I'm guessing that is how the writer wants us to feel.

It reminds me of The Umbrellas of Cherbourg. Similar type of ending where the love between two people although once intense and strong end up with different partners later on in life based on life circumstances.

I didn't sense any despair. What I saw was a woman who'd finally come to term with her past. She knew that nothing in her life could ever match the passion she had with Bud, but it's gone, and she finds strength in what's been "left behind." In other words, the woman today is better for having had that experience, and now she must move on and put the past in perspective.

Look at it this way: can you imagine Deanie as the wife of a farmer? I can't. She made the right choice with her new fiance.

reply

That's true I never thought of it that way. No I can't picture her as a farmer's wife. I guess I'm just a hopeless romantic and wanted them to be together!
