Why didn't Bud just wait a few years for Deanie?

Why was he in such a hurry to marry Angelina instead?

reply

For one...maybe he thought he lost Deanie (since she was in mental institution)but more importantly (be mindful of the narrative of the story)...he was trying to honor & respect the trusted professional "authorities" wishes--------
remember after the water-fall scene, the doc said the BEST thing he could do for her was to leave her alone, never bother her again.

Guess, simply put, he believed the doctor (as many did with authority in those days). One would hope he thought he was doing the right & selfless thing, what was best for Deanie's full recovery.

It probably has something to do with the reasons that he obviously doesn't visit her during her time in the asylum. He repressed his true feelings for her, initially under the influence of his domineering father.🐭

I think the point of the film was to show how society screws people up - parents, teachers, doctors, and priests all feature in the story. Bud was pressured directly and indirectly to keep apart from Deanie.

The Wall Street crash represented society having fallen apart, bankrupted in every sense. After that he could follow his inclinations freely and marry who he wanted - unfortunately it was too late for him and Deanie.
