I thought this was really true to life , how mean some women are to other women at the work. The mean women pick on other girls that might be quiet types or maybe they're new and aren't part of the clique. This has happened to me at work before so I really related to that part and how upset she is by this. Her salary at the Five and Dime was only $25 Dollars a week, but then again the prices of groceries and rent back then was so low compared to now.
$25/week is not a high salary at all, even for 1961 prices and especially in NYC. Minimum wage in 1961 was $1.15/hour, so even if she only worked a 20 hour week, she was still making barely over minimum wage. Granted salary wasn't much, but taking into account inflation the salary was decent. Also the dollar was much stronger then.
