Mary Ann's Coworkers At The Five and Dime Store

I thought this was really true to life , how mean some women are to other women at the work. The mean women pick on other girls that might be quiet types or maybe they're new and aren't part of the clique. This has happened to me at work before so I really related to that part and how upset she is by this. Her salary at the Five and Dime was only $25 Dollars a week, but then again the prices of groceries and rent back then was so low compared to now.

Women are notorious for ripping each other. That happens everyday where I work.

"Women are notorious for ripping each other." True. They can be harpies and are always jealous and envious.

The woman who worked at the same counter with Mary Ann was Doris Roberts....from Everybody Loves Raymond.

And that freaky next door neighbour to Mary Ann's apartment - well ROOM really....was Jean Stapleton, aka Edith Bunker.

reply

I know this is 4 years old, but I thought that was Edith Bunker her voice sound so familiar but she seemed tall compared to Mary Ann.

$25/week is not a high salary at all, even for 1961 prices and especially in NYC. Minimum wage in 1961 was $1.15/hour, so even if she only worked a 20 hour week, she was still making barely over minimum wage.
Average Income: $5,315/year
Minimum Wage: $1.15/hour
New Home: $12,550
New Car: $2,849
Average rent: $110.00/month
Regular Gas: $0.27/gallon
Movie Ticket: $1.00
First Class Stamp: $0.04

Granted salary wasn't much, but taking into account inflation the salary was decent. Also the dollar was much stronger then.

Avg Income: $5,315 in '61 would be approximately $42,351.13 in 2014
Min. Wage: $1.15 pr hr in '61 would be approx. $9.16 in 2014, more than current
New Home: $12,555 in 1961 would be approx. 100,041.10 today
New Car: $2,849 in 1961 would be approx. 22,701.48 in 2014
Avg. Rent: $110 monthly in 1961 today would be approx. $876.51
Reg. Gas: $0.27/gal in 1961 would equate today to $2.15/gal
Movie Ticket: $1.00 in 1961 would equate today to $7.97
First Class Stamp: $0.04 in '61 would be $0.32 today

Her $25 a week salary today would be $199.21 a week.

Her room was modest, to say the least, but she was only paying one fifth her salary in rent. I know of no one able to do that now.

I like long walks, especially when they are taken by people who annoy me.

I like kids...especially when they go home with someone else.
