Question about catastrophic event in film's climax [SPOILERS]

Okay, this is a question for those who've seen the film:

When part of the bridge collapses from the fire, one of the train's two passenger cars falls off, but not the other one, which still holds the hero and heroine. Since the passenger cars are linked together, why isn't the second one pulled down when the first one falls off the bridge?

reply

a train coupling hooks horizontally (side to side) , not vertically (top to bottom) , so they can move up and down while hooked together while moving forward or reverse, so technically if a car were to drop straight down it could slip down from the other coupling,
and its a movie, so anything can happen!

Ephemeron.

I just finished watching this film on my DVR an hour ago and noticed the engine drops down first off the burning bridge since it was heaviest. The engine was pushing the two passenger cars from behind. They were able to escape from the engine and climb into the second passenger and run forward through the first one to safety. I thought they would all have gone down when the engine fell too since they had to be coupled. But since the engine was pushing and not pulling the cars maybe they did not need to be connected at all? Maybe.

Excellent point.
