Lousy movie

Terrible, terrible movie! Allison's character acts like a spoiled brat and not like a young woman who has the wherewithal to write a book. Lynley really blew that role. It's painful watching Allison behaving as though she owns her publisher. Her entire performance is nothing more than a two hour pouting session.
Terrible.

"If I don't suit chu, you kin cut mah thoat!"

Lynley certainly blew her lines with that silly, monotonous voice.

Not a great movie, but Mary Astor part makes the whole mess worth watching .

I totally agree about Allison, especially about her voice. Some actresses in the 40's affected that kind of voice and it seems like she copied them. She was a successful model originally, and always seems to be posing.

I have to believe that tone is a result of bad direction. Throughout the first half Allison is snarky. Why? She's unwilling to go to NYC. Why? She had just spent time there living alone and supporting herself. Suddenly she's a helpless waif!

Not only that. Allison spends a good deal of the film being suspicious of, and agitated with, Jackman. The audience can easily infer that Jackman is largely manipulating Allison for romance, even if a genuine book deal is in the works. Then, out of the blue, Allison suddenly appears to feel betrayed that Jackman is actually concerned with her career and not as much with their relationship. As much as I love Carol Lynley - and her performance here isn't necessarily bad per se - the relationship between Allison and Jackman, it appears, was rewritten one too many times.
