Question
Does anyone know who was the artist for The Rebel - I mean who painted the pictures (the good and bad ones!?) Do you think it is the same person who did all of them?? The "rubbish" ones are really funny!

shareSaw a very very poor print of "The Rebel" at the National Film Theatre last night and looked this up when I got home.
It appears that Paul's pictures were actually done by a chap called Alistair Grant (1925-1997). There are some examples of his work on the internet; judging by these, it is hard to tell whether he was being ironic.
I have not yet been able to establish who was responsible for "the rubbish".
Winds light to variable.
Oh right - thanks for the information! Maybe Hancock painted "the rubbish!?" They make me laugh every time I see them!
shareHello - I have been trying to research Bill Beavis (1919 – 1997) (my Father in Law) who was a scenic artist at this time. I believe that he painted "the rubbish". I recall that we were watching the film one afternoon and he said that many of the paintings were done by him. They fit some of the (better) style of paintings that he did in his spare time. Bill said Tony Hancock was a nice person to work with and had a good opinion of him.
Bill never kept notes of his film work other than a few diaries.

Hugely late reply but if you go to Alistair Grant's obituary here: http://www.independent.co.uk/news/people/obituary-alistair-grant-1261254.html
it states that Grant was behind both the good and the bad paintings.
Yes that makes sense to me. If you think about it there is absolutely no difference between Paul's second paintings and the so called Rubbish.
Let Zygons Be Zygons.
Alistair grant did them all. The good and 'the rubbish'.
