One of my favorite movies with a primarily black cast.

And, one of the best. I watched this film again yesterday for the umpteenth time & was reminded why I adore it so! I appreciated Daniel Petrie's ability to capture the confinement of the Younger Family, not just physically in the tenement building, but emotionally.

Cast wise, I can't picture anyone else but Claudia McNeil as 'Lena". To me, she WAS "Lena". I loved her portrayal of the character's combination of strength, sterness, & vulnerablity. In my opinion, I think she should have at least gotten an Oscar nod. Shame that she didn't. That was one of the best & most poignant performances from a Black actress I've ever seen. Second only to her was Juanita moore in Imitation of Life. And I can't help but see "Ruth" everytime Ruby Dee steps onscreen---no matter what other project she's in. A Wonderfully, wonderfully made & truly moving film.
