Maybe it's just my imagination, but do I see Langston Hughes and Joe Louis sitting in the background?

Could be. The club was well known in Chicago, located at 611 East 63rd Street, it was open from 1952 to 1966. The clubs owners were Melvin & Marjorie Sims and Marjorie had a walk on in the movie. I didn't find any mention of Hughes or Louis being in Chicago when I checked the Chicago Tribune archives.
