Wouldn't the liquor store venture have ended in disaster?

I found it amazing that now matter how much that family was struggling Walter (and his two investor friends Willie and Bo) always had enough money for liquor and cigarettes.

How could those three competently run a liquor store without drinking up the inventory?

We will never know.

Every time I watch this, I ask myself the same question.
I understand his feelings and why he wants to be his own man and run his own business. He should have started his own Cab company.

As I recall, there was NO liquor store. It was all a con. That was Walter's error. He put the wish before the thought. A friends "lawyer" had drawn up the plans but he was too ignorant/lazy to verify if they were genuine of even if this man was even a lawyer. The rush of the deal should have clued him in.

"always had enough money for liquor and cigarettes."

That's part of what keeps the poor in their financial situation. There's a lot of poor folk who lean on these vices from day to day. But you're right, I've known a lot of drinkers who tried to get into the bar business and drank themselves into bankruptcy. I doubt a liquor store would have made them any richer.
