A (not so new) cliche of today turns up in this film...

Anybody notice when talking with Newman's character in his office at some point in the film his boss utters the line: "It is what it is." Kinda funny--especially since as I remember he says it with a lot of gravity.

I thought the plot was cliche but by today's standards. Maybe it was even cliche back then. But what did surprise me and was not really cliche was the ending not in every romantic drama the two leads don't end up together. Though strangely enough (since the leads were married in real life, I thought there was more chemistry between Dianne and Sidney's characters--maybe the director did that intentionally.
