shareI wouldn't say that she was too young for the father, either. People kept saying that she was too young for him. She was only after his money, of course, but age-wise, I didn't see a problem.

I know. I wondered the same thing. I was very surprised to see she was only 27. She did look closer to 40. Maybe it was the hair. It looked almost gray to me.
In later scenes though, when they showed her face close up, she looked much prettier, but I still wouldn't have guessed 27.

Yeah, I agree she looked early to mid 30's. You only pick up that there was an age difference between Vicki and Mitch because they make it an issue.
And yes, it probably had a lot to do with the "older lady style" short hair, the color and the way they dressed her. The women dressed so formally in films even in 1961. A hold-over from a prior studio era.
Really, they were just a few years away from jeans, tie-dye tee shirts, and bare feet.
I would have though she was at the very least, in her early 30's. I think it's the hair style- it aged her a good few years, but it must have been the style.
Maureen O'Hara got a much better hair style than Joanna Barnes in this movie, and looked younger even though she was in her 40's at the time. Joanna was very pretty in the movie, though- her face is stunning, but what a terrible hair style they gave her!
Actually, she was only 26. I'm 27 and I don't think either her or Meredith from the remake look that young lol. Sometimes I can see that she is young and she obviously looks much younger in this than she does as Meredith's mum in the remake- like others have said, it's the hair that's aging her. She was meant to be platinum blonde but it looks grey
shareI agree it's the bubble cut, which was very popular in 1961. I like the style, but it makes her seem older.
Check her out in "Auntie Mame", which was just three years prior (1958). She plays the debutante girlfriend, and she has a blonde pageboy haircut. She looks 18 there.
