Let's build our own DVD review...

Okay, we all know the One-Eyed Jacks transfers appear to have much suckitude. A few have mentioned the versions they have may not be too bad. Of course, confusion reigns supreme over which disc is what, due to mass production... So... I've made a 'makeashorterlink' to each version I could find on Amazon - if you have that version, please post the technical details (...appears to be original aspect ratio of 1.85:1, or pan and scan, etc....)and your honest opinion of the audio and video quality (fer instance, not great but you can live with it, horrible, don't waste your money etc..) - and if anyone has a link (with dvd cover, to help us know which one to look for) I didn't post, please do so.

(note: my links will take you off-site, I wasn't sure imdb would allow for target=blank.)

Okay:

One-Eyed Jacks disc 1: Release July 7, 1998 from Madacy Records
http://makeashorterlink.com/?G1973396D - snazzy looking cover, which automatically makes me suspicious. Fullscreen.

One-Eyed Jacks disc 2: Release June 29, 1999 from Platnum Disc
http://makeashorterlink.com/?K1B72296D - aspect ratio said to be 1.85:1 - no picture of cover

One-Eyed Jacks disc 3: Release January 8, 2002 from Unicorn Video
http://makeashorterlink.com/?P4E62196D - this one makes a big deal about everything being digital.

One-Eyed Jacks disc 4: Release January 22, 2002 from Alpha Video
http://makeashorterlink.com/?K3A72496D

One-Eyed Jacks disc 5: Release January 1, 2003 from Diamond Ent. Corp
http://makeashorterlink.com/?M3C72596D - unfortunately, no picture of cover.

One-Eyed Jacks disc 6: Release September 1, 2003 from Westlake Entertainment
http://makeashorterlink.com/?E2186596D - aspect ratio noted as 1.33:1

One-Eyed Jacks disc 7: Release October 7, 2003 from Brentwood Home Video
http://makeashorterlink.com/?P4286296D - aspect ratio noted at 1.85:1

One-Eyed Jacks disc 8: Release February 10, 2004 from St Clair Vision

The Madacy version is unwatchable -- an absolutely terrible transfer. Stay away from this travesty!

The Brentwood Home Video version is acceptable. It is letterboxed 1.85, but is not enhanced for 16 x 9 widescreen TVs. The print has some dirt, and the color is a bit faded, but it's certainly watchable.

I've got the Front Row version (which you haven't listed) and I find it quite acceptable - it's widescreen with good sound and it seems to be from a good source print. Not only that, but it's got a cool cover - I definitely recommend it until someone decides to spend some money on a definitive release. Check it out:

I've also heard good things about the Platinum release - from all accounts it's a good widescreen print. Here's the cover:

Miserable fullscreen transfer. Steer clear of this one.

recently i checked a region 2 pal-version of this movie
from orbit media ltd
http://tinyurl.com/262dqv

the worst transfer i have ever seen (and i saw a lot of bad transfers, including some from shochiku - a century of japanese cinema).
its 4/3, combing ghosting everywhere, no details, the colours are soo wrong (there is no yellow, no red ....). ok its 5 pounds, and thats too much!

Do any of these DVDs have English subtitles?
