Of numerous DVD releases, which is best?

I've never seen this movie, and I'd like to --- but when I went to Amazon I found at least six different releases on DVD, ranging in price from $4.99 to $26.99. There's even a "twofer" release where you get both Night Tide and Carnival of Souls (which I have seen). Anyhow, if anyone can offer any tips on which version to buy or rent, I'd appreciate it. Meanwhile, I'll just keep an eye out for it on late night TV!

Coincidence ... or conspiracy? You decide!

Go to www.amazon.com and buy the one for $7.98, the 2003 make. It has the
original trailer. That's the one I got.

This is probably too late to influence the original poster, but other folks might read this.

The most expensive one is the best, I'm afraid. It's from Image Entertainment's Milestone Collection. It has a great widescreen transfer, nice liner notes, commentary from Dennis Hopper and Curtis Harrington, and the trailer. Shop around online and you should be able to find it for around 20 bucks (it's worth it!).

But if your budget is strict, just get one of the cheap releases. They aren't the best representation of the film but I first saw it on of those cheap AMC collections that had CARNIVAL OF SOULS, THE ATOMIC BRAIN, AND THE BRAIN THAT WOULDN'T DIE. I like it more than CARNIVAL OF SOULS myself. It's not as creepy but I love its strange mood.

..watching this while listening to the commentary of Hopper and Harrington is fascinating! The DVD with commentary was done in 1997 (I had to "do the math" following a comment by Dennis Hopper regarding his "taking his son Henry who is seven, to the same Merry-Go-Round in the film-and according to IMDB Henry was born in 1990.
(PS Curtis Harrington died last year)
More fascinating trivia from the commentary---Curtis noted that the interior set shots were filmed by Floyd Crosby, then Dennis piped in that Floyd was the father of David Crosby!
Fun stuff!

Ditto what you said about the Milestone Collection version. I have it and think it's well worth the money.

reply

I agree with the two posters regarding the Milestone version. Having said that, I have a real soft spot for the Miracle Pictures budget release from 2003 because it's the first DVD my wife and I watched. Got it from one of those little cheap stores that does all of those public domain DVDs for $1 each.

But yeah, as far as the movie itself is concerned, the Image/Milestone version is the one to get. The commentary is great...even if Hopper sounds like he can remember precious little of the movie's production...lol.

Surely this one is ripe for a reissue with an anamorphic transfer though?

reply

I just saw a 2008 film version, restored by the Academy Film Archive. If that makes it to DVD, that's probably the best choice.

reply

I really hope that the newer restored version makes it to DVD (Blu-ray would be even better!) one of these days. After having gotten a HDTV I was sad to find that the Milestone release isn't anamorphic. It still looks good on a tube television, though.

reply

Thanks for bringing this to my attention, I sent Criterion a suggestion email for this title.

I couldn't say what the best is, but I wasn't impressed with the Alpha Video release. There was a lot of streaking/ghosting and the dialogue was hard to make out at times.

I own the AMC four pack, which includes The Atomic Brain, The Brain that Wouldn't Die, Carnival of Souls and Night Tide. The copy is good - it's clean and the sound is fine. It's not wonderful. I'm tempted to shell out the money for the most expensive copy, the one with the liner notes. Night Tide is worth it. So is Carnival of Souls (the others, well... maybe not).

If you got the release without the Dennis Hopper/Curtis Harrington audio commentary (two interesting guys with many interesting stories), you can download an mp3 of it here:

Thanks for posting the DVD audio commentary "VinnieRattolle." The trivia that Dennis and Curtis shared was very interesting indeed!

Carol Doda, the stripper was mentioned in their conversation. She was arrested for marijuana possession in the mid 1960's. After she was released from prison, she played "Sally Silicone" in "Head" ('68). Does anybody know why Curtis brought her up? Does she have a small role in "Night Tide" perhaps?

Thanks!

Cheers!

This is fantastic. Thank you for sharing.

I did work with Dennis Hopper many years ago. At his Venice home, of all places, which was a rather amazing experience. (And, yes, Mr. Hopper did call me "man.")

A genuinely down-to-earth person.

Wonderful to hear these two gentlemen together remembering their mesmerizing film.
