The Captain or Mora (Spoilers)

Did the Captain or Mora murder her previous boyfriends? At the end the Captain said he did them but toward the end Mora attacks Johnny when they're underwater, so I'm thinking she really did do them. Also she swims off and was still alive so how did she die? And the mysterious woman was never explained either. So I guess what I'm asking is this one of those films were there really is no definite answer and we have to draw our own conclusions?

So many possible interpretations. My immediate impression was that Mora just wanted to get away, the cut air hose was a means to finally cut the link with Johnny. She did not seem alarmed that he escaped. She then swam off and drowned, thinking she was going back to the Sirens.

Perhaps she did go back, leaving her body behind. Perhaps the mysterious woman was a Siren after all, perhaps she, not the Captian, drowned the others. As to why the Captain would protect her, that's another mystery.

There was a story in the newspaper that suggested, I think, that Mora had been on exhibit for 20 years. Either she was a lot older than she looked or began very young. More mystery.

The key will be in occult symbolism, they went to the trouble of doing a proper Tarot reading, with valid significances for the cards, though that is easy enough if you have the book Waite wrote to go with the pack.

I wonder if she swam back to shore and returned home to the Captain. Maybe she had killed her other boyfriends and the Captain, in a fit of jealousy and disgust at her actions, killed Mora. He then put her body into the viewing tank at the carnival, but there are many possibilities as to an ending.
