Disappointed in the Poll

I thought it was a cruel joke. Here I was hoping on the DVD for an interactive voting screen where I could choose what would happen to Sardonicus. Bummer...

Oh I know. I would have voted for him. Come on who wouldn't be bitter if their face turned out that way. I liked him more than the good guy.

Mmmm.....my DVD had a poll and I voted- in favor of Sardonicus! It was close, but he won by a single vote. Anyway, since Sardonicus won, my DVD had a much happier ending. Sardonicus enjoyed a hearty meal -including pizza and some Bud Light, and he engaged in a rather lusty interlude with that leechy maid and a couple of those busty farm babes. Oh, and he poked Krull's other eye out.

You would think that in this day and age, where cinemas run on digital format and practically every DVD has "Director's Cut" footage and alternate endings, a movie with multiple endings (like Mr. Sardonicus) would be quite easy to pull off.

I've been re-reading my copy of The Big Book of Losers (Paradox Press, 1997), and the "Movie Gimmicks Time Forgot" strip mentions several such movie gimmicks in cinematic history: Aromarama and Smell-o-Vision, Emergo, Percepto, the Coward's Corner and so on. But out of all those gimmicks, audience polls like Mr. Sardonicus' "Punishment Poll" is the only one that I'd really like to see come back to cinemas, complete with actual multiple endings (and, hopefully, a cooperative projectionist in the booth).

But then, I used to run with the Angels with Hard-Ons (a Rocky Horror Picture Show fan participation troupe) and I'm a big fan of movies and plays which feature audience participation. So I may not necessarily be speaking for the majority here.

Back in the day, when the film was released, they actually could have quite easily done a genuine poll at the end (not a faked one). All projection boxes had two projectors (for alternate reels), so they could have simply had the "no" vote on the end of the playout reel, and the "yes" vote on its own reel which the projectionist would lace up on the other projector. Projectionist looks out, does an eyeball of the vote, and either lets the current projector keep running for "no", or switch over (as per end-of-reel procedure) for "yes".

Making an actual good ending sounds like money and time Castle wouldn't have wanted to have spare. Honestly a twist ending like the one we got sounds more interesting than just having a happily ever after type of ending for Sardonicus.
