Deeply Potent Film

Highly underated and hugely enjoyable film that has been criminally overlooked -the philosophical and theological bleakness reminded me in parts of 'The Seventh Seal' from four years earlier in '57 but I also couldnt help but see this films foreshadowing in films like 'The Exorcist' or even Russels 'The Devils' that came much later.

The realistic humour, mockery and fascination of the villagers was brilliant as was the tortured priests agonising journey to his fate.
